Theatre has its origins in the Greek word “theama,” which means a sight or spectacle. The place where these spectacles were held were called “theatrons.” Though a place where movies are shown is also referred to as a “theatre,” here the discussion is about live performances that began to take shape in ancient Greece about eight millenia ago.

Every culture seems to have a history of embellished reenactments of their own significantly historical events. From ancient to modern theater, actors donning costumes and makeup recreated history on stage before spectators.Confused? <a href='http://b-townblog.com/2013/05/02/print-our-5-coupon-for-burien-little-theatres-playwrights-fest-which-starts-friday/ ‘>Here ‘s a little help . They take creative license where necessary to enhance the drama and action.

Theater follows the mindset of the culture of the people in attendance. Plays that dealt with major issues that ancient societies were dealing with from governmental problems to love still fuel ticket sales today. The fundamental subject matter has not changed. Only the contexts, methods of acting and special effects have changed.

Today’s theater seems to not have any taboo subjects, but ancient public theater performances could bring down the heavy hand of a leader whose reign was ridiculed or shown in an unfavorable light. This caused playwrights to veil the true subjects of their disdain and mockery using characters and plot conventions to make their points without directly portraying real people. This then opened the door to creation of purely fictional theater.

Since the emergence of film as a popular medium for entertainment in the early twentieth century, filmmakers have mined their stories from a variety of sources. Adaptations of stage plays and musicals have been popular, therefore, since the beginning of film history because the plays on which the films are based have usually already garnered critical or financial success.

Some of the earliest “talkies” were adaptations of stage shows that had either been performed on Broadway or on the vaudeville circuits. The Marx Brothers films Animal Crackers and The Cocoanuts, for example, were based on stage shows the brothers had done. Early Cary Grant hits, including Holiday and His Girl Friday, were also based on stage plays.

In the mid-twentieth century, musicals reigned supreme on Broadway, and film adaptations of musicals were extremely popular in Hollywood. The Rodgers and Hammerstein hits Oklahoma!, South Pacific, and The King and I were all made into successful films. Four of the movies that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in the 1960s were based on stage musicals: West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and Oliver!. Non-musical plays were also a great source for films in the 1950s and 60s, with adaptations of the Tennessee Williams plays, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, both earning great critical acclaim. Film versions of The Odd Couple, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Death of a Salesman were also all successful.

While the movie musicals of the late twentieth century were less critically lauded than their predecessors, several films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors gained cult-like followings. Straight plays fared a little better in the late 1900s with film adaptations of plays like Amadeus and On Golden Pond picking up several awards.

The beginning of the twenty-first century ushered in a new era of success for the movie musical. Chicago became the first musical based on a Broadway show to win the Best Picture Oscar since 1968. It was followed up by the box office successes of Dreamgirls and Les Miserables. Plays also continued to be adapted to film in the 2000s with Doubt, Frost/Nixon, and War Horse all being popular among both audiences and critics. Movies like these are extremely popular on TV today, and you can watch these and others with http://www.direct2tv.com.

Successful plays become that way because they have both great writing and interesting plots. Since these are the most important foundations for a good movie, it only makes sense that good filmmakers would continue to mine the stages of New York and London for their next great inspiration.

The first proper theater — a building exclusively dedicated to the performance of theatrical productions — was built in London in 1576 and appropriately named “the Theatre.” Thanks primarily to the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I and her court, playwrights, actors and theatrical productions were gaining a new and widespread acceptance across society.

William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright and bard of all time, flourished during this time, and it was due to his near superstar popularity that the most famous theater of all time was built: The Globe Theatre.

The Globe was first built in 1599 by a group of shareholders called the “Lord Chamberlain’s Men” that included Shakespeare and members of his acting troupe. The Globe was an astounding success right from the beginning, with many of Shakespeare’s famous plays performed there for the first time.

The original Globe burnt down in 1613, but was immediately rebuilt and remained in operation until 1642 when it was closed by the Puritan government of Oliver Cromwell. The building was torn down altogether in 1644 and its location forgotten until its foundations were rediscovered in 1989.

In 1997 the modern “Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre” opened some 200 yards from the spot of the original Globe. The modern building is a carefully researched replica of the original, and both period and modern plays are performed there from May through October.

Broadway was in the entertainment business long before Hollywood. Broadway actors have real talent. They are not allowed to make mistakes during performances. There are no retakes. The show must go on. Here are three great plays you should see this year on Broadway.

The Phantom of the Opera
This classic show features a ghost and the crew of a French Opera House. In the play, the choir girl Christine is being tutored by the ghost. The ghost drives off the lead singer so that Christine can have the lead role. Christine falls in love with someone, but the ghost loves Christine. He kidnaps Christine so that she will be his bride. The play is a classic combination of music and theater.

Chicago
Two women killers fight for fame, while hoping their fame can save them from death row. The play is set in 1920’s Chicago.

Mary Poppins
The play is based on the classic Disney Film. In this story, a family gets a visit from a nanny with a bag full of magical tricks.
